Here at The Glow Up, we hate to play favorites, but we’d be lying if we said we didn’t have a very special place in our hearts for actress/activist/“it girl” Yara Shahidi. While Hollywood is thankfully steadily filling with more young, black female talent on the rise, few have shared a trajectory so relatably similar to The Glow Up’s own process of building, growing and making major breakthroughs within the last year (hit show plus Harvard? Come on!). Besides, she’s our play-daughter in our heads. (Editor’s note: And a fellow Minneapolis girl—woot, woot!)
Whether breaking boundaries in her own adorable way each week on her hilarious new hit show Grown-ish, breaking—and making—fashion rules on the red carpet, or breaking it down about the role of art in the fight for equality (her Instragram caption reads: “We don’t integrate, we recreate #WeTooAreAmerica”) Yara always makes us proud. Happy 18th, young queen!
I think my 17th Year may have been my favorite. Then again, I leave every year thinking it to be my best, only for it to get topped by the next. But this particular revolution around the sun has been full of love, fantastic music, college app anticipation, family, last minute travel, inside jokes with my brothers, therapeutic conversations with my amazing parental unit, realizing I'm grownish, wandering, wondering, figuring out friendships, friends who are like family, the launching of voting initiatives, new mentors, fashūn moments, James Baldwin books, entering new creative spaces, entering new adolescent spaces, and so much more. Eternally grateful for the beauty that I've been able to experience amidst a terrifying of political Year. Thank you to all who surround me for demonstrating the beauty that arises from action and for giving me tools so that I may take confident strides ✨ #18
